"Relationship between Beauty and her father "
While discussing the relationship between the father and the daughter in the The Courtship of Mr Lyon and The Tiger’s Bright, which is retelling of Beauty and the Beast by Angela Carter it can be noticed that Beauty is dependent on her father and connected to him. It can be seen in a couple different ways. Looking at the situation where a Beast offered her a place to stay and her father was leaving. She was rather sad and not encouraged to be alone with Beast, almost wanting to have some kind of support from her dad or just his presence was desired by her. Elsewhere, contrasting circumstances would be at the time when Beauty spends quite some time with the Beast, she does not feel that much of a need to come back home to her father and her attachment begins lessens. ‘The telephone shrilled; for her. Her father. Such news !’ (Cartner, page 30). However, when her father called, then again the feeling of connection came back. Moreover, in the very beginning Beauty while waiting for her father to come back home, she is worryingly looking out the kitchen window for him; ‘... pauses in her chores in the mean kitchen to look out at the country road. Nothing has passed that way all day; the road is white and unmarked as a spilled bolt of bridal satin.’ (Carter, page 26). That fact indicates that they have a loving relationship between father and daughter. She cares about him, wants him to be safe and she loves him. On the other hand, Beauty wanted one thing from his father which was a white rose. Clearly in the story Beauty’s father shows his effort of trying to make his daughter’s wish come true, however his attempt is not successful. The reason for that is because Beast, seeing him stealing his roses, has grown mad. Nonetheless the father of Beauty has good intentions, the consequences of doing such a thing will not miss him. 'Take her the rose, then, but bring her to dinner,' he growled; and what else was there to be done?’ (Carter, page 29). At this point he must bring his daughter to an unknown stranger, who more specifically is the Beast. Nevertheless taking a risk of stealing that rose shows the love of his to. The attachment of father and the daughter played a strong role in this relationship.
